Remove the sound from a video

Drop a video and get it back with no sound. The picture is copied across without being decoded, so a long video takes seconds and looks exactly as it did, and the file keeps its format. It suits a clip you want to post without the sound of the room, or one you will put music under later.

How to use it#

  1. Drop a video onto the box above, or click it to choose one.
  2. The sound is taken out straight away, and the page lists each track it removed.
  3. Play the silent video in the preview, then download it.

Why muting is quick and loses nothing#

A video file holds the picture and the sound as separate tracks. Muting writes a new file with the picture track and nothing else, copying the compressed picture byte for byte, so there is no decoding, no re-encoding, and no change in quality. An hour of video is done about as fast as a minute.

The file keeps its format: an MP4 comes back as an MP4, a MOV from an iPhone as a MOV, and a WebM or an MKV as the same. The date, place, and phone model a video records are kept too; the video metadata viewer shows them and can make a copy without them.

Every sound track goes#

Some videos have more than one sound track: an iPhone 16 or later can record spatial audio beside the normal stereo, a screen recording can keep the microphone apart from the computer sound, and a film can carry several languages. All of them are removed, and the page names each one, so the silent file cannot keep a track you did not know was there.

The file comes out a little smaller, by about as much as the sound took up, which for a phone video is usually a few per cent. To make it much smaller, use compress video, and to keep the sound instead of the picture, MP4 to MP3 saves it as an MP3.

Frequently asked questions#

Does removing the sound lower the quality?

#

No. The picture is copied into the new file exactly as it was, without being decoded or compressed again, so it is identical to the original.

Can I mute only part of a video?

#

Not here: the sound is removed from the whole video. To keep only a silent part, cut the video first with trim video, then drop the cut here.

Can I remove the music and keep the voices?

#

No. In most videos the voices and the music are mixed into one sound track, so removing it removes both. Pulling them apart takes software that splits a recording into its parts, which this page does not do.

Why is the silent video not much smaller?

#

Sound takes little room next to the picture. A phone video spends most of its size on the picture, so taking the sound out saves a few per cent. Compress video is the way to make it much smaller.

Can I remove the sound from a video on an iPhone?

#

Yes, and on an Android phone too. The page works in Safari on an iPhone and in Chrome on Android. On an iPhone, tap the box, choose Photo Library, and pick the video. iOS hands the page a converted copy rather than the original, usually as H.264, so the silent video matches that copy. It is saved in the Files app, where it shows under Recents, and Share, then Save Video, puts it in Photos.

Is my video uploaded?

#

No. The video is read and rewritten inside this browser tab, and the silent copy is handed straight to your downloads. Nothing is sent to a server.
