29 tools, all running in your browser

Shrinking, rearranging, signing, unlocking, and converting PDFs, done by your own browser. A contract, a bank statement, or an unpublished report never leaves your machine.

Combine, split, and shrink

Put documents together, take pages out, turn or reorder them, or make the file smaller.

Convert to and from PDF

Turn pages into pictures or text, read a scan with OCR, or turn pictures into a PDF.

Sign, protect, and mark up

Sign it, add text or fill in its form, number or watermark its pages, black out what must not be seen, edit its title and author, or add a password or restrictions.

Why uploading a PDF is worse than uploading a photo#

PDFs are the documents people least want to hand over. A holiday snap on somebody else's server is an annoyance; a signed contract, a payslip, a medical letter, or a board pack is a different category of problem. A file sent to a server is processed where you cannot see it, and whatever happens to it afterwards is something you have to take on trust.

Everything here runs as JavaScript inside your tab. The file is read into memory, changed, and handed back as a download. You can watch the network panel stay empty while it happens, which is a stronger guarantee than any policy page.

What a PDF actually is#

A PDF is a container of objects: page definitions, fonts, images, and a cross-reference table saying where each one lives in the file. That structure is why merging and splitting are quick and lossless. Pages are moved between documents whole, with their contents untouched, and nothing is re-encoded on the way. A page split out of a report is byte for byte the page that was in it.

It is also why a PDF is not an image. Text in a PDF is usually real text with a font attached, not pixels, which is what lets it stay sharp at any zoom and be selected and searched. Turning a page into a JPG throws that away and gives you a picture of the words instead.

Where the size goes#

Merging two PDFs gives you a file roughly the size of both together, sometimes slightly less where they share fonts. Splitting does not shrink a page much either: the fonts a page needs come with it, and an embedded font can be a few hundred kilobytes on its own.

A scanned PDF is a different animal. Every page is a photograph and the text is not text until OCR reads it. Those files are large because images are large, and they stay large, though compress PDF can shrink the pictures inside.

Frequently asked questions#

Are my PDFs uploaded anywhere?

#

No. Every one of these tools runs in your browser tab. The file is never sent to a server, which for a contract, a statement, or anything under an NDA is the only acceptable answer.

Is there a page or file size limit?

#

No fixed one, because there is no upload to cap. The limit is what your browser tab can hold in memory, which handles documents of a few hundred pages comfortably. A very large scanned file on an older phone is where you would feel it.

Will there be a watermark?

#

No. Nothing is added to your file that you did not ask for. The file you download is the file the tool made.

Can these edit the text inside a PDF?

#

Not the words already on a page. You can put new text on top with add text to PDF, and type into a form with fill PDF form. Changing the words that are there means rewriting the page content and the fonts around it, which is a different and much larger job.

Do they work on a password protected PDF?

#

Only once the password is off. An encrypted PDF cannot be read without it. If you have the password, the PDF password remover takes it off in this browser and gives you an unlocked copy to use with the other tools. A file that opens freely but is locked against printing or copying is refused by the tools that change a file, and the remover lifts those limits only with its owner password.
